What makes you write what you write?

I have been asked that question among others and have been wondering about it.

Especially when it comes to erotica, the question is often whether you write about situations you actually have been in or whether it's purely fictional.

Even if that may kill the mystery, I need to state that my erotic short stories are all purely fictional. There is a difference between who you are in real life, what you do in real life and your fantasies. Only few (lucky and brave) people have the courage and opportunity to live their fantasies without getting harmed.

Even if at times I wish my fantasies would come true some day, I'm probably safer if they don't. This mainly because dreams and fantasies are often much better in your head - or on paper for that matter - than in real life. Writing can be a form of escapism, a way to live the life you want to without the negative effects. Nobody gets hurt, nobody gets blamed, nobody needs to feel embarrassed. The moment you lay down your pen (or quit typing) all possible social consequences of considered deviant behaviour fade to words only. Whether it changes you inside is a different matter. Maybe, after some time, concentrating on a specific subject may lead you to see it differently in real life. Still, it will never be the same as on paper since the consequences on paper are made by you and you only; in real life some consequences are unexpected and out of your own control.
